Rob Breakenridge Redux
I appeared on the Rob Breakenridge Redux podcast (CHQR 770 AM) on April 5 to talk about the conscience rights debate.
During the discussion, Rob and I discussed the right wing extremists in the Wildrose Party, including Link Byfield. Amongst the many things we discussed was my impression that Danielle Smith may be the “face” of the Wildrose but she is not representing the majority of the voices in her party nor those of many Wildrose candidates when she claims to be pro gay rights, pro choice. Since this aired, we’ve been faced with Hunsperger’s “lake of fire” blog and Leech’s claims that he is a better candidate based on nothing more than the colour of his skin. During the interview I stated to Breakenridge that if “people want to be bigots, let them be bigots” and went on to explain that it is not just the bigoted comments of a few candidates that we must be concerned with. It is those comments combined with policy such as conscience rights, citizen initiated referenda and candidates who have allowed their religious ideology to influence their politics that should make us all think twice about a province led by a Wildrose government; a government that does not reflect who Albertans are now, who we want to be in the future.
